On September 14, Magdalena Grono, European Union Special Representative (EUSR) for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia, visited the Matenadaran, accompanied by Vahan Kostanyan, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of the Republic of Armenia.
During her visit, Ms. Grono was introduced to the Matenadaran’s rich manuscript heritage, with particular focus on the original manuscripts and copies of manuscripts created and preserved at Gandzasar. She also learned about the history of their creation and preservation, as well as the Matenadaran’s ongoing work in the fields of research, conservation, restoration, and public engagement.
Ms. Grono was also presented with reproductions of the manuscripts that had been displayed at the Matenadaran in Gandzasar. It was emphasized that original manuscripts have never been exhibited there. The use of reproductions has made it possible for the public to engage with this important manuscript heritage while ensuring the secure preservation of the originals.
At the conclusion of the visit, the Director of the Matenadaran, Mr. Ara Khzmalyan, reflecting on the centuries-old history of preserving manuscript heritage, emphasized that the ability to safeguard what has been created over millennia is a testament to the responsibility of its custodian and the enduring care devoted to this heritage.
“Only the owner can preserve for millennia what they have created,” emphasized Matenadaran’s Director Ara Khzmalyan.
