THE 800TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE KHORANASHAT MONASTERY

This year marks the 800th anniversary of the Khoranashat Monastery. Khoranashat is a unique spiritual, educational and cultural centre with historical significance. Khoranashat was one of the most important research centres in medieval Armenia in the 13th century. On May 11, a press conference dedicated to the 800th anniversary of Khoranashat was held at Mashtots Matenadaran. The speakers were: the Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia Ara Khzmalyan, the Prelate of Tavush Diocese Bishop Bagrat Galstanyan, the Director of Matenadaran Vahan Ter-Ghevondian, the Scientist Secretary of Matenadaran Vahe Torosyan, and the coordinator of the initiative group Khoranashat 800 Gevorg Saghoyan. The press conference was followed by the exhibition entitled “Manuscript Treasures of Khoranashat”. Several samples of manuscripts created and preserved in Khoranashat Monastery were presented, as well as studies dedicated to the founder of the Khoranashat monastery, Vanakan Vardapet. On May 28, the Holy Liturgy with the “Khoranashat Gospel”, written in 1224 and brought from Matenadaran, and the blessing ceremony of the four cardinal directions will be celebrated in Khoranashat, and the next day, on May 29, a conference will be held following the presentation of the book Khoranashat 800.
