MASHTOTS-TSISARAN | ARMENIAN SACRED RITUAL BOOK

The Mashtots is one of the most significant ritual books of the Armenian Church, containing the guidelines for various ceremonial practices. It was compiled in the 5th century at the behest of Catholicos Sahak Partev and was titled The Blessing List. According to the historian Kirakos Gandzaketsi, in the 9th century, Catholicos Mashtots Yeghivardetsi edited The Blessing List and created the Mashtots Ritual Book. This book includes rituals associated with key life events, such as baptism, marriage, and burial, as well as agricultural rituals, like the blessing of seeds, winepresses, wells, and land. It also features various spiritual and pious ceremonies, including the blessing of water, grapes, homes, sacrifices, and bread. Additionally, it outlines the ordination procedures for different ranks of clergy, the process for anointing a king, the blessing of myrrh, and other ceremonies. Recently, the “Mashtots” has been categorized into three types: 1. *Small or Hand Mashtots* (containing the rules for rituals performed by the priest), 2. *Mother Mashtots* (containing the rules for rituals by the bishop) and 3. *Father Mashtots* (containing the rules for rituals performed by the Catholicos, including the blessing of myrrh, the ordination of bishops, the anointing of kings, and the anointing of the Catholicos).
