AFTER MORE THAN 600 YEARS, AN EXCEPTIONAL MANUSCRIPT, THE GOSPEL OF ARBERD, FOUND A SHELTER IN MATENADARAN

Under the leadership of RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, the Government presented a valuable Gospel of the 15th century to Matenadaran.

Zhanna Andreasyan, RA Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports, Chairman of the Matenadaran’s Board of Trustees, presented the manuscript to the Matenadaran.

The collection of the Mesrop Mashtots Matenadaran was supplemented with another Gospel copied by the monk Izit. The manuscript was copied in 1405 in Arberd’s Surb Astsvatsatsin Monastery near Narekavank. It is the only known manuscript preserved from the monastery. Arberd Monastery is now completely destroyed.

The name of the painter is unknown. The miniatures belong to the miniature school of Vaspurakan. The commissioner is the monk Tadeos, who donated it to the monastery of Huskanordi of Argelan (Vaspurakan).
