MATENADARAN WAS THE LOCATION WHERE TWO MANUSCRIPTS BY THE SAME SCRIBE MET A HUNDRED YEARS LATER. THE GOSPEL OF ARBERD HAS COME HOME AFTER CENTURIES OF WANDERING ON UNKNOWN SHORES

The manuscript donated to Matenadaran was written in the Arberd Surb Astvastatsin monastery of Vaspurakan, which is located not far from Narekavank and is special as it is a unique manuscript preserved from the famous Arberd monastery and is also rich in illustrations: images of the evangelists, semi-altars and marginal decorations. The Gospel is a valuable example of the Vaspurakan miniature school. The only record of the Armenian people’s culture and developed writing traditions in this ruined monastery is this manuscript that was written and painted there. The manuscript was written by a scribe named Stepanos (Izit) in 1405, of which only one Gospel has been known to us, copied in Narekavank in 1420, and which is kept in Matenadaran.
