ON MARCH 3, 1959, THE COUNCIL OF MINISTERS OF THE ARMENIAN SSR GRANTED MATENADARAN THE STATUS OF A RESEARCH INSTITUTE

Sixty-five years ago, on March 3, 1959, the Council of Ministers of the Armenian SSR granted Matenadaran the status of a research institute. Matenadaran was a state repository of ancient manuscripts, and with this decision, its main activities were officially established and remain unchanged to this day. These activities include conservation and restoration of manuscript heritage, creation of microfilms, academic description and cataloguing of manuscripts, publishing, translation, and popularization. Matenadaran follows the classical principles of Armenology, which have been revised over time to meet scientific standards. The employees of Matenadaran have worked tirelessly over the years with unwavering dedication and the silence and concentration of a hermit. Working at Matenadaran is not just a job but also a moral and psychological responsibility that inspires and charges every employee.
